Carved oak feather box

This carved feather box is made from 1/2" red oak; interior dimensions are 1" x 3" x 15 1/2". It features an eagle feather carved on the lid (it took 32 minutes to carve it). The sliding lid is a friction fit -- no hardware.

The feather box project started when a customer ordered two feather boxes made from cedar. I wanted to carve the feather, but the cedar wouldn't hold the fine detail. But after I delivered the two cedar feather boxes, the customer ordered an oak box. The carving on the oak box is about 500% better than what it would have looked in cedar.

What's a feather box? Native Americans use these boxes to hold their most prized and guarded feathers -- including eagle feathers. This particular box was designed to carry and protect the customer's feather while traveling on his motorcycle.
